House of Representatives Provides Oversight the Public Deserves: Requests Trump’s Tax Returns

Statement of Public Citizen Experts

Note: In a letter sent to the Internal Revenue Service on Wednesday, U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee Chair Richard Neal (D-Mass.) used the authority of his committee to formally request the past six years of President Donald Trump’s personal and some of his business tax returns..

“As the public takes to the streets to demand release of the full Mueller report and underlying findings today, it’s essential that Congress also use all of its tools towards getting to the bottom of this complicated story. Part of the picture we need to see is how Trump’s financial ties to Russian or other foreign interests may be influencing his policy decisions. These tax returns are an important key to unlocking those truths.”

– Lisa Gilbert, vice president of legislative affairs

“The 2017 tax giveaway bill is case in point on why Congress must have access to Trump’s tax returns. Without that critical information, it is impossible to know much he and his family are personally gaining from those changes.”

– Susan Harley, deputy director, Public Citizen’s Congress Watch division
