Public Citizen Applauds Proposal by Sens. Udall and Bennet To Overturn Citizens United

Statement of Robert Weissman, President, Public Citizen

Note: Public Citizen played a key role in the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission case. Public Citizen attorney Scott Nelson was a member of the legal team that represented the key congressional sponsors of the McCain-Feingold law. Public Citizen has launched campaign for a constitutional amendment, which can be found at www.DemocracyIsForPeople.org.

Public Citizen thanks Sens. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) for their leadership in calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s damaging 2010 decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which gave corporations the ability to spend unlimited amounts of money from their treasuries to influence elections.

In the wake of Citizens United, our elections have been inundated with outside money, much of it coming from undisclosed donors. We need a constitutional amendment to remove the corporate influence from our elections and restore democracy to We the People.

Public Citizen applauds Sens. Udall and Bennet, along with their co-sponsors, for introducing legislation to do just that.
