Biden Cracks Down on Junk Fees in Higher Ed, Saving Students Billions

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Biden administration today announced a crackdown on junk fees in higher education, which would eliminate student loan origination fees, college banking fees, automatic charges for textbooks, and stop colleges from pocketing leftover meal plan dollars. Candace Milner, racial equity policy associate for Public Citizen, released the following statement:

“Students should not be bombarded with misleading junk fees as they matriculate through higher education programs. The administration’s actions will help ensure that college necessities like bank accounts, textbooks, and meal plans don’t come with a side of hidden fees that line the pockets of greedy corporations and schools. This will help make higher education more affordable and accessible for students, and save them billions.”
