A Dirty Ford Petition Signature Delivery
Public Citizen and Partners Deliver A Quarter Million Petition Signatures to Company Headquarters
We drove a Ford Focus which we dubbed the “Dirty Ford” — adorned with a black cloud of pollution, a tailpipe fog machine and money spewing from the gas tank — to send a message to Ford Motor Company: Stop working with President Trump to roll back clean car standards.
Our Dirty Ford transported more than a quarter million petition signatures (from us, Sierra Club, Greenpeace USA, Environment America, CREDO, Care2 and SumOfUs) from Washington, D.C. to Ford’s headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, and we documented the trip online with the hashtag #DirtyFord.
Check out the Dirty Ford’s road trip:
We’re driving to Michigan in a #DirtyFord delivering a quarter million petitions to @Ford HQ. Our car—adorned with a black cloud of pollution, a tailpipe fog machine and money spewing from the tank—highlights the consequences of Ford’s effort to roll back #CleanerCars standards. pic.twitter.com/w03lQcDSar

We’re launching our trip to @Ford HQ from the company’s new lobby shop in DC. Ford’s lobbying has already led to the rollback of #CleanerCars standards, the largest federal climate program on the books. #DirtyFord pic.twitter.com/FxYxlqkJ8v

The #CleanerCars standards have already saved US drivers $59 billion at the gas pump. This road trip’s about calling out #DirtyFord’s efforts to roll them back — leading to more trips to the gas station and money wasted. pic.twitter.com/02O5oaIye0

Pit-stop at the Cuyahoga River, once so polluted it caught on fire. Many credit this as the wakeup call that spurred the creation of our country’s bedrock environmental laws. We’re demanding #DirtyFord and #PollutingPruitt stop working on rollbacks that take our country backward. pic.twitter.com/pllD9iGjVf

.@Ford, take note: We made it to Detroit, and we’re coming at you with 250,000 signatures from consumers outraged at your collusion with Trump. Americans don’t want a rollback of #CleanerCars standards that cut emissions from the largest source of carbon pollution in the country. pic.twitter.com/NyIClaQtcF

Now that our #DirtyFord made it to Detroit — transporting a quarter million petition signatures — we’re LIVE with @SierraClub, @greenpeaceusa and local activists demanding @Ford stop working to roll back #CleanerCars standards. Tune in: https://t.co/w01pQvRqvC pic.twitter.com/fHl8GVL2cj

Each petition signature we’re delivering to @Ford today represents a person who wants to keep greenhouse gases out of our air and pollution out of our lungs. It’s time Ford listens to the people and stops putting profits over consumers and the planet. pic.twitter.com/PpsTRlTzne

If #CleanerCars standards are rolled back, our cars will spew the equivalent of a year’s worth of pollution from 150 coal-fired power plants. #DirtyFord pic.twitter.com/v6yrEmPeLS

Join our activists on the ground in calling @Ford and urging the company to stop working with Trump and Pruitt to roll back #CleanerCars standards—adding 6 billion metric tons of climate pollution to the atmosphere and costing consumers billions at the gas pump.

First stop: Ford’s new Corktown digs for its electric vehicle teams. Hot tip: If you want “smart vehicles for a smart world,” don’t work with Trump to roll back the #CleanerCars standards that put the most fuel-efficient vehicles ever known on the road. https://t.co/JSI8YXiMMh pic.twitter.com/cvVv5f82zW

We’re at the Ford Piquette Plant, the birthplace of the Model T, which made @Ford synonymous with American innovation. Fast forward a century and the company’s working to roll back #CleanerCars standards.#DirtyFord should be ashamed at its regression. pic.twitter.com/n0IRQY3lIW

“I don’t have much of a choice, do I?” – Scott, @Ford security
Much to Ford’s dismay, we just delivered a quarter million signatures to Ford HQ, concluding our cross-country road-trip in a #DirtyFord. RT to let Ford know you won’t let them get away with a #CleanerCars rollback. pic.twitter.com/85yP6VHEJd

Ford’s head of security begrudgingly took the petitions on behalf of the company, but we left determined to confront Ford’s top staff and express our outrage.
Fast forward to the end of the week, and we got back in the “Dirty Ford” — this time in search of Ford’s CEO Jim Hackett, who was in Washington, D.C. meeting with President Trump about the clean car standards. More on that here.
