The Truth About Tariffs

Decades of so-called "free trade" trade policies enabled corporations to offshore production to low-wage countries knowing that they would face low tariffs when they imported those goods back for sale here. This is a system that kills good-paying jobs, exploits workers abroad, ignores the climate crisis, and leaves consumers vulnerable to shocks of our overly concentrated supply chains.

When used strategically and as part of a broader industrial policy, tariffs are an important tool for protecting U.S. jobs and industries from unfair competition.

However, Trump’s erratic threats of across-the-board tariffs are not designed to help working people, but rather to bully other countries into accepting his imperialist and anti-immigrant agenda.
