Thirteen Russian Nationals, Three Russian Entities Indicted in Election Meddling Investigation
Statement of Lisa Gilbert, Vice President of Legislative Affairs, Public Citizen
Yet another shoe has dropped with today’s indictments, and any claims that the Russia investigation is a hoax are now clearly revealed as attempts to deflect from the story behind the curtain.
Working with the Internet Research Agency, a Russian organization, which has connections to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the defendants did research on our elections, posted content pretending to be Americans, targeted key states, “posted derogatory information” about candidates and by the time election season was in full swing were “supporting the presidential campaign of then-candidate Donald J. Trump and disparaging Hillary Clinton.”
Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation is bearing fruit because there is an entire orchard to pick from. This investigation itself must be robustly protected to ensure that our democracy is maintained. In addition, we must take proactive steps to ensure that this never happens again.
