With Rosenstein’s Likely Exit, Protecting Mueller Becomes Imperative

Statement of Lisa Gilbert, Vice President of Legislative Affairs, Public Citizen

Note: We welcome the U.S. Senate’s planned reintroduction of the Special Counsel Integrity Act, to ensure independent investigations and judicial review of the removal of a special counsel, to join the House companion, H.R. 197, as reintroduced by U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) on Jan. 3.

It’s imperative that Congress act immediately on the Protect Mueller legislation, to be introduced today by U.S. Sens. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.). The full Congress should immediately join these senators in setting aside partisan concerns and recognizing that protecting the rule of law and election security is vital to our country.

Rosenstein has been an essential ingredient in the recipe to protect the investigation from the president’s ire, while William Barr has expressed open hostility to the investigation, making especially urgent the passage of this bipartisan legislation.
