The case for campaign finance disclosure ex-post Citizens United v. FEC
In Citizens United v. FEC the U.S. Supreme Court expanded the scope of the case at hand and, in so doing, dismantled what weak and ineffective campaign spending constraints were already in place. A report just issued by the Brennan Center for Social Justice yesterday examines the constitutionality of disclosure laws and the impact of the now infamous court ruling. Their report shows, “. . . an ongoing need to promote transparency in the money in politics realm.”
Public Citizen could not agree more regarding the need for transparency. A recent Hart poll shows that nearly four out of every five voters supports a constitutional amendment overturning the Supreme Court’s ruling. We have joined forces with our board member Annie Leonard to educate others about the significance of the ruling and get involved in our campaign www.democracyisforpeople.org.
