Statement: Save Democracy, End the Filibuster
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following Senate Republican’s filibuster of H.R. 3233, a bill that would create a bipartisan 9/11-style commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, Lisa Gilbert, executive vice president of Public Citizen, released the following statement:
“The filibuster must go. Today, GOP Senators wielded this obstructive, Jim Crow-era relic to kill a commonsense, bipartisan bill co-sponsored by 35 GOP Members of Congress. This essential legislation would have created an independent commission to investigate the violent insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6. Now, we must look to Congress to move on a Select Committee, or an alternate option, to provide the American public with the answers they deserve.
“Truth and accountability are hallmarks of a functioning democracy. An investigation into this attack on our government is neither partisan nor controversial — it is what our country needs to heal and protect ourselves from future attacks.
“At this point, it is crystal clear: to save democracy, we have to end the filibuster. The American people deserve a working Senate; a Senate that will safeguard our democracy, put people over profits, and act on the pressing crises our country faces.”
