Senators Who Voted for Tillerson Failed the American People
Statement of David Arkush, Managing Director of Public Citizen’s Climate Program
There is no justification for installing a Putin-friendly CEO of Exxon to run the U.S. State Department. Rex Tillerson has made clear that he is unable or unwilling to answer important policy questions, that he is unwilling to denounce clear human rights violations and that he minimizes the importance of the greatest threat to the U.S.: climate change.
Trump administration foreign policy moves to date have ranged from merely offensive and counterproductive to outright unconstitutional and anti-American. Now, more than ever, we need a competent, qualified secretary of state who will stand up for U.S. values. The 56 senators who voted for Tillerson have failed the American people, and many if not most of them likely will come to regret it.
