Public Citizen Sues Trump Administration for Withholding Information on Slush Fund
Washington D.C. — Today, Public Citizen Litigation Group filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the Department of Justice after it failed to respond to two FOIA requests seeking information on Trump’s so-called “Anti-Weaponization Fund.”
This fund was created to funnel tax payer dollars to reward Donald Trump’s allies, including the 1600 people that have been charged in connection with the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021. Public Citizen’s FOIA requests sought information about how the nearly $1.8 billion amount was chosen and communications between the Justice Department and Trump’s lawyers concerning the settlement in which the Department promised to create the Fund.
“Taxpayer dollars should not be used to reward allies of the sitting President, much less people who used violence to undermine American democracy,” said Lisa Gilbert Public Citizen co-President. “The administration hasn’t even bothered to respond to our request—not a denial, not an explanation, just silence. That kind of stonewalling supports concerns that the Fund was the result of a collusive deal to transfer taxpayer dollars to supporters of Trump.”
