Public Citizen v. Department of Justice (FOIA)

On May 18, the Department of Justice announced the establishment of a $1.8 billion fund, dubbed the “Anti-Weaponization Fund,” to funnel taxpayer dollars to Donald Trump’s allies, including people convicted of crimes in connection with the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021. In May and June 2026, Public Citizen submitted two Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to the Department, seeking information about how the amount was chosen and seeking communications between the  Justice Department and Trump’s lawyers concerning the settlement in which the Department promised to create the Fund.

After the Department failed to substantively respond, we filed suit asking the court to compel the Department of produce the requested records.
