Misguided Block of Bipartisan Mueller Protection Bill Is an Affront to Democracy
Statement of Lisa Gilbert, Vice President of Legislative Affairs, Public Citizen
Note: Today, U.S. Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) attempted to force a vote by unanimous consent on bipartisan legislation that would protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling with the 2016 presidential election. Their efforts were blocked by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) under the pretext of “liberty.”
Senators Booker, Coons and Flake have earned the gratitude of all Americans who want to finally get to the truth and learn the exact extent of Russian meddling in our 2016 elections. The American people also hope today’s push to support legislation protecting Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation will not be the last attempt. President Trump has tried to pressure, sway and cajole the U.S. Justice Department into weakening Mueller’s probe.
But true liberty involves protecting this investigation from interference because a functioning democracy means no one is above the law. Not even a president.
