Justice Department Launches Investigation into Former DHS Advisor Corey Lewandowski
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Justice Department has reportedly initiated a criminal investigation into former top Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) advisor Corey Lewandowski over claims that he profited from his role in a personal capacity. This inquiry comes as a response to a referral from the DHS inspector general.
In response, Public Citizen democracy advocate Jon Golinger issued the following statement:
“Power corrupts and is easily abused when handed to the wrong person. The appointment of Corey Lewandowski last year as a so-called Special Government Employee at DHS raised bright red flags and the potential for abuse of power and self-dealing, which we called out again and again. We urge the Justice Department to investigate and to carry forward its investigation without fear or favor and the next Congress to take action to ensure no more Lewandowskis are given this kind of unchecked authority and this never happens again.”
Golinger testified before Congress this spring on the subject (The Ultimate Grift: How DHS is Enriching the President and his Allies at Taxpayer Expense). He urged Congress to investigate potential corruption in the awarding of Department of Homeland Security contracts during Lewandowski’s tenure at DHS.
