Indiana Power Outage Lasting Weeks Must Be Investigated
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A powerful derecho storm swept through Northwest Indiana on Aug. 11 that has left thousands of residents without power for more than two weeks. Indiana Gov. Mike Braun on Monday directed the state’s utility consumer advocate to seek a regulatory investigation into Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO). In 2023, Public Citizen opposed the acquisition of NIPSCO by private equity firm Blackstone, Inc. Tyson Slocum, energy program director for Public Citizen, released the following statement:
“Gov. Braun is right to demand a formal investigation to determine why NIPSCO failed the residents of Gary. Now that state regulators have opened a formal investigative proceeding, it is essential that it include residents, community organizations, houses of worship, and all other entities impacted by the unacceptable delays in restoring essential utility service.”
