Follow Public Citizen on Instagram, help us identify disguised ads
Does Rihanna really wear Puma shoes? Does Khloe Kardashian really use Fit Tea? If you looked at their Instagram accounts, you may think so. But more than likely, these Instagram posts are non-disclosed paid ads.
On Instagram, disguised ads are rampant; deceived consumers often believe celebrities are making genuine, self-directed and enthusiastic endorsements of brands. They don’t realize that those celebrities are paid and may not even use the touted brand.
We sent a letter to the FTC, asking it to strengthen oversight and bring enforcement actions against companies that pay for ad placements on Instagram social media accounts.
