Public Citizen’s Aquene Freechild to Testify at Hearing on New Jersey Elections Security Act
WHAT: Public Citizen’s Aquene Freechild will testify today in favor of S2633, the New Jersey Elections Security Act, before the New Jersey Senate’s State Government, Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation Committee. The New Jersey Elections Security Act lays out a timeline for funding New Jersey’s conversion from insecure and aging paperless, electronic voting machines to paper ballot and scanner systems.
In the 2016 election, hackers attempted to breach voter registration systems of more than 20 states and hacked one voting system vendor. The hacking attempts laid bare the vulnerabilities in U.S. election systems. Malware to change election outcomes is nearly impossible to detect on paperless voting systems; New Jersey is one of the few states that relies almost exclusively on paperless machines. The New Jersey Elections Security Act is key to transitioning the state to a more secure system based on voting machines that count hand-marked paper ballots or ballots marked with an assistive device for voters with disabilities.
