Public Citizen v. Mineta (airbags)
Public Citizen, the Center for Auto Safety and others have challenged the Department of Transportation’s decision to lower the standards of protection that air bags must satisfy for unbelted crash tests. The case was eventually transferred to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, which on July 20, 2004, rejected our challenge to the airbags rule and held that the agency had not acted irrationally in using 25 mph rather than 30 mph as the standard for protection.
