Senate Republican Proposal for Taxpayer-funded Billion Dollar Ballroom Boondoggle Faces Some Headwinds

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Republican members of Congress are beginning to come out against the proposal by Senate Republicans to spend a Billion Dollars in public money on Trump’s White House Ballroom project.  This could mean the proposal is removed via the Byrd process or could cause a hard vote.

According to a report this morning, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa, “has made clear that he does not support the inclusion of any language in the DHS funding bill pertaining to the ballroom, and he will be voting accordingly.”  Multiple Republican Senators have also expressed skepticism about including the Billion for the Ballroom in the DHS funding package, which will soon be voted on in the Senate Judiciary Committee.  Senate Democrats this morning made clear in a statement they will fight the including of the Ballroom funding and propose amendments to delete the Ballroom from the DHS funding bill.

“The argument for Trump’s Billion Dollar Ballroom is falling apart faster than Trump’s wrecking ball demolished the East Wing,” said Jon Golinger, Public Citizen democracy advocate. “We urge the American people to tell their members of Congress to vote ‘no’ on the Ballroom boondoggle.”

“The bourgeois ballroom billion is an unpalatable appetizer served as part of the main course of billions for ICE and CPB’s cruelty. This reconciliation package underscores how out of touch the GOP are with what regular Americans want,” added Public Citizen co-president Lisa Gilbert.
