Will FDA Pick Advance Trump’s Dangerous Deregulatory Agenda?
Statement of Dr. Michael Carome, Director, Public Citizen’s Health Research Group
Note: Today, President Donald Trump nominated Dr. Stephen Hahn to be the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner. Hahn is an oncologist and the chief medical executive at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Trump has a consistent record of nominating candidates to lead federal agencies who are chosen purely to support the administration’s dangerous deregulatory agenda, consequently undermining public health, harming consumers and destroying the planet.
It is reasonable to assume that Dr. Hahn has assured Trump of his commitment to advancing such an agenda at the FDA. It is critically important that the U.S. Senate press Dr. Hahn about his thinking and priorities regarding the regulatory oversight of drugs, medical devices, tobacco products and other consumer products regulated by the agency and the assurances he has made to Trump.
