Trump’s Rollback of Climate Risk Disclosure Rules Will Leave Investors in the Dark

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Friday announced it proposed a rescission of its climate-related disclosure rules that required large public companies to disclose to investors climate-related financial risk information, including Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions.

In response, David Arkush, director of Public Citizen’s Climate Program, issued the following statement:

“Risks to investors and the public from climate change grow by the day, yet the SEC is backtracking on modest information disclosure for investors that would give insight on climate-related financial risks and greenhouse gas emissions. The proposed rescission of these disclosure rules is the latest effort by the SEC to roll back disclosure and limit investor access to information. For polluting industries that seek to downplay their role driving the climate crisis and their exposure to related risks, this proposed rule is yet another gift from the Trump Administration.
