Trump’s Latest Deregulatory EO Calls for a Lawless, Unconscionable Rollback of Commonsense Public Protections

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump late Wednesday issued an executive order calling for agencies to identify and repeal regulations that appear inconsistent with recent rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court. Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, released the following statement:

“Regulations are the critical public protections we depend on to keep our food safe, our environment clean, our financial system protected, safeguard our civil rights, and so much more. This executive order is attempting an unconscionable rollback of safeguards that protect the American people.

“In addition, the EO aims to cut out the required notice and comment intended to give impacted communities, members of the public, businesses, and others the chance to engage with the rulemaking process. Nonsensical false ‘efficiency goals’ that pander to greedy corporations should never supersede commonsense public protections or the process required by law.

“President Trump is not a king. He cannot simply roll back regulations that protect the public without going through the legally required process. We will challenge this blatantly unlawful deregulatory effort at every step to ensure it doesn’t hurt workers, consumers, and families.”
