Trump Jr.’s Hunting Buddy Diamantas a Poor Choice for Acting FDA Commissioner
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Dr. Martin Makary resigned under pressure today. Kyle Diamantas, the Deputy Commissioner for Food, was named the acting FDA Commissioner. Previously Diamantas was a Miami attorney who represented Abbott Laboratories, which manufactures infant formula, and a hunting buddy of Donald Trump Jr., President Trump’s son. He received his law degree from the University of Florida in 2013. Makary was the FDA Commissioner for 14 months.
Dr. Robert Steinbrook, Health Research Group Director at Public Citizen, issued the following statement:
“Kyle Diamantas had little experience regulating food when he was named the FDA’s Deputy Commissioner for Food in 2025, and he has even less experience regulating drugs, devices, and other medical products. Diamantas is an attorney with no scientific or medical credentials. The American people deserve an acting FDA Commissioner with deep expertise in the agency’s many responsibilities. Diamantas’ background inspires no confidence that he will ensure the FDA’s full independence from Pharma and political interference.”
