Toyota’s EV Sales Surge as Consumers Ditch Gas Vehicles

WASHINGTON — In the company’s global May sales figures, Toyota announced this week that  it had increased EV sales by 170% year-over-year. The mammoth growth in Toyota’s EV sales was a bright spot in a report where year-over-year sales numbers declined by 7.4%—and by 9.6% in markets outside of Japan—the fourth month in a row the world’s largest automaker has seen its numbers fall. In response, Adam Zuckerman, senior clean vehicles campaigner with Public Citizen’s Climate Program issued the following statement:

“This should prove once and for all to Toyota that consumers are clamoring for electric vehicles. While Toyota is still far behind its competitors in the clean vehicle transition, its modest EV investments are already starting to pay dividends. If Toyota fully embraces the future and marshals its resources into EVs, it could lead for decades to come.”
