The People Have Demanded That Congress Strengthen Democracy and Return It to Voters
Statement of Lisa Gilbert, Vice President of Legislative Affairs for Public Citizen
Note: Today, members and incoming members of the U.S. House of Representatives gathered to announce their intention to introduce and support H.R. 1. The legislation, expected to be introduced at the beginning of January’s 116th U.S. Congress, would improve our democracy by changing campaign finance laws, grappling with our corruption problems and strengthening voting rights.
Congress is taking up this package because people nationwide have demanded it. This is our democracy and we are taking it back.
We applaud Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes and all the other new and long-term members who are stepping up to the plate to fix our democratic systems as their first order of business. A true home run would be a legislative package that is bold and visionary, reining in out-of-control corruption in the executive, Congress and the courts, fixing our moneyed system of politics, and protecting and expanding our voting systems.
