Sessions Testimony Leaves More Questions Than Answers; Public Citizen Renews Calls for Subpoenas and Independent Investigation

Statements of Public Citizen Experts

Note: Today, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions appeared before the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee in an open hearing.

“After Sessions’ testimony, the most generous thing that can be said is: Questions abound. What’s more clear now is that we still need an independent commission to determine the facts.”

– Robert Weissman, president, Public Citizen

“While it was critical that today’s hearing took place in a public and transparent manner, this openness was not enough to ensure that Sessions answered all of the many questions the public deserves a response to. It is imperative that we understand what role the attorney general truly played in the firing of former FBI Director James Comey, as the facts proffered in his memorandum concerning Comey are robustly distinct from the reasons stated on cable TV by the president for the firing, namely President Trump’s issues with the ongoing Russia investigation.”

“Today’s hearing left us with a thirst for additional information, and we encourage the Senate Intelligence Committee to assuage that thirst by issuing subpoenas to garner the missing facts, in addition to pursuing further in-depth investigations.”

– Lisa Gilbert, vice president of legislative affairs, Public Citizen
