Republican Hearing to Spin California Fires to Move a Deregulation Agenda
WASHINGTON — Republicans on a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee are set to host a hearing today entitled “California Fires and the Consequences of Overregulation” in an attempt to spin the impacts that burning fossil fuels had on the billion-dollar disasters that hit Los Angeles in January. In response, Carly Fabian, senior insurance policy advocate with Public Citizen’s Climate Program, issued the following statement:
“As climate change drives an insurance crisis, no state is currently prepared for the full extent of its impact. Falsely scapegoating California’s consumer protections won’t solve a crisis affecting insurance markets across the country. Policymakers should see through the industry’s post-disaster playbook of public protections. Florida’s crumbling insurance market is the poster-child for failed attempts to woo insurers by weakening regulation. Without addressing the root cause of climate change, policymakers virtually guarantee that insurance premiums will become unaffordable for far too many communities.”
