Public Citizen Thanks Reps. Yarmuth and Jones for Bipartisan Effort to Get Money Out of Politics

Statement of Lisa Gilbert, Deputy Director, Public Citizen’s Congress Watch Division

Note: Public Citizen played a key role in the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commissioncase. Public Citizen attorney Scott Nelson was a member of the legal team that represented the key congressional sponsors of the McCain-Feingold law. Public Citizen has launched a campaign for a constitutional amendment. Details can be found at www.DemocracyIsForPeople.org.

Public Citizen thanks U.S. Reps. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) and Walter Jones (R-N.C.) for their leadership in calling for a constitutional amendment to get money out of politics in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s damaging 2010 decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which gave corporations the ability to spend unlimited amounts of money from their treasuries to influence elections.

In the wake of Citizens United, our elections have been inundated with outside money, much of it coming from undisclosed donors. Public Citizen applauds Reps. Yarmuth and Jones for showing that ridding our election system of the flood of money is not a partisan issue.
