Public Citizen Demands Answers after Meta Suspends No Kings Account During Day of Action

WASHINGTON D.C. — Today, Public Citizen launched an investigation after Meta suspended the official No Kings Instagram account and locked out its organizers on Saturday, October 17, during the coalition’s massive, nationwide get-out-the-vote action.

Public Citizen filed a Freedom of Information Act asking for all communication between the Department of Homeland Security and Meta regarding the No Kings Movement.

“Meta has offered different explanations for the temporary suspension and lock out of organizers of the No Kings account during the largest single-day voting activation in American history,” said Lisa Gilbert, Public Citizen co-President. “Their discordant response and lack of transparency is unacceptable. Our investigation into the communications between the administration and Meta, coupled with our No Kings coalition letter demanding answers are both designed to get to the bottom of these cagey rationales. The public deserves to understand why these actions occurred. There are real ramifications during the election season. We demand real answers.”

On Monday, the No Kings coalition sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg regarding the lock out.
