Progressive Groups Surpass 500 Community Gatherings Across the U.S. In Preparation for Second Trump Term
Washington, D.C. – In living rooms, recreation centers and union halls across 32 states and counting, thousands of people are coming together to create deeper connections, build out a progressive vision and protect our vulnerable communities ahead of a second Trump presidential term.
We Are Worth Fighting For is a mobilization project organized by progressive advocates including Indivisible, MoveOn, Public Citizen and Working Families Party. Only hours after Election Day, the project kicked off with a virtual call that brought in 100,000 people which has led to more than 500 community gatherings. Gatherings are continuing through mid-December with new events posted every day.
“These meetings create a space for people to express strong feelings and build an even stronger movement,” said Public Citizen Co-President Lisa Gilbert. “We must think strategically about what the next four years will look like for all of us. Together, we can create meaningful change that ensures we are safe and healthy, surrounded by a loving community, but that vision starts with getting to know our neighbors and making a plan.”
“Now more than ever, there is a high premium on creating community and turning anxiety into action. We have been encouraged by the energy that everyday people are showing to be in community with one another and to talk to each other about how to hold the incoming administration and Congress accountable,” said MoveOn Political Action Executive Director Rahna Epting. “In this short time, having a commitment of 500 community gatherings demonstrates that our voices matter and that people will not be silenced. One of the best ways to defy right-wing MAGA extremism is to resist the urge to disengage and stay in the fight.”
“The recommendation we’re making is folks should show up in community together right now, and make clear to one another that we’re not alone,” said Indivisible Co-Executive Director Ezra Levin. “Because that’s how fascists ultimately win, is by making you think that you’re alone and you have no power.”
“Trump and his MAGA movement are going to try to pit our communities against one another. That’s why it’s more important than ever that we’re showing up for our neighbors and building connections with people who may not agree with us 100% of the time,” said Maurice Mitchell, National Director of the Working Families Party. “I was encouraged by the over 100,000 people who tuned into our mass call, and the hundreds who recently took action by hosting a community meet-up. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and what’s going to get us through it is each other.”
“It was so powerful to come together with over 60 people from across our region to hold each other in our feelings, connect to what matters most to us and recommit to showing up for each other in bold and loving ways throughout this next era,” said Briana Herman-Brand who hosted a gathering in Seattle. “People left inspired to grow a more welcoming and strategic movement where everyone has a role and we are more powerful together.”
