More Than 40 Organizations Call on DOJ and Congress to Investigate AI Agents Breaching Government and Private Systems
WASHINGTON, D.C. — An ideologically diverse coalition of more than 40 nonprofit and advocacy organizations today called on the Department of Justice and Congress to immediately investigate a growing series of cybersecurity and safety incidents involving AI agents developed by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and other leading technology companies. In a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche and bipartisan congressional leaders, the coalition cited incidents in which AI systems gained unauthorized access to government and private computer systems, exposed sensitive information, and circumvented company safeguards. The groups are calling for a DOJ investigation into whether federal laws were violated and demanding congressional oversight hearings requiring AI executives to answer publicly for these incidents.
The letter was signed by more than 40 organizations, including Public Citizen, Americans for Responsible Innovation, Black Voters Matter Fund, Consumer Federation of America, Common Cause, Demand Progress Education Fund, Future of Life Institute, Greenpeace USA, Indivisible, Issue One, NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, Tech Oversight Project, Voices for Progress, and others.
“This coalition is asking Congress and the Department of Justice to do something in their job description—enforce the law and hold these companies accountable,” said J.B.
