Johnson Must Schedule Floor Vote on Clean Extension of ACA Subsidies
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, several moderate House Republicans have joined House Democrats to call for a vote on a clean extension of ACA subsidies that are set to expire at the end of the year. If the subsidies expire, health care premiums would increase for millions of Americans and around 4 million people would lose insurance.
Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, issued the following statement:
“Trump and Republican leaders in Congress have made it clear that — if given their way — the ACA subsidies would expire at the end of the month. Some moderate Republican members seem to have finally come to the realization that the loss of these credits would not just be a cruel slap in the face to millions of Americans already struggling with higher costs, but also a terrible move politically.
“American families should not have to choose between heating their homes, putting food on the table, and taking their kids to the doctor. A clean extension of the credits is an obvious necessity in the face of this already painful affordability crisis.
“Speaker Johnson must immediately schedule a floor vote on Jeffries’ clean 3 year extension, and all members should vote to pass it. America’s health care system is deeply flawed but it’s unconscionable to make it still worse by needlessly skyrocketing insurance premiums for 20 million Americans.”
