In Fool’s Errand for Republicans, Big Oil Tries Again on Oversight ESG Hearings

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After their first hearing on environmental, social, and governance initiatives devolved into barely comprehensible conspiracy theories and gossip, two subcommittees of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Accountability will hold a hearing today entitled:“ESG Part II: The Cascading Impacts of ESG Compliance.” In response to the hearings, Clara Vondrich, senior policy council with Public Citizen’s Climate team, issued the following statement:

“As their constituents get hammered by skyrocketing home insurance prices due to climate-charged forest fires and other extreme weather, Republicans on the House Oversight Subcommittees are busy denying that the climate crisis poses real financial risks and trying to force private investors to fund more fossil fuels.

“If the damage elected officials inflicted on state pensions, taxpayers, and consumers wasn’t so severe, it would be easy to dismiss this effort as childish theatrics. But, unfortunately, this ‘anti-ESG’ effort is causing real harm in the few places it’s been adopted as policy. It needs to be stopped.”
