House Republicans Pass Plan That Raises Taxes on the Middle Class, Gives Cuts to Corporations

Statement of Robert Weissman, President, Public Citizen

Note: The U.S. House of Representatives today passed its version of the Republican tax overhaul. The bill passed with 227 votes for giveaways to corporations and 205 against. Thirteen Republicans voted against the bill. No Democrats voted for it.

We are outraged that the House chose to transfer so much wealth to billionaires at the expense of our working families. The bill would:

1. Facilitate dynastic accumulation of wealth;
2. Shower more than $1 trillion on corporations;
3. Drive good jobs overseas; and
4. Undermine our democracy by allowing churches and charities to endorse candidates.

To all the corporate interests that benefit from this bill that hurts the rest of us, we say: See you tonight. We’re bringing the people to Tax Prom to remind you what democracy looks like.
