House Passes Protecting Our Democracy Act to Prevent Presidential Abuses of Power
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives today passed the Protecting Our Democracy Act to restore checks and balances and prevent presidential abuses of power. Lisa Gilbert, executive vice president for Public Citizen, released the following statement:
“Our nation’s balance of powers is out of whack, like an overloaded seesaw teetering toward the executive branch. The overreach and abuses of the last administration exposed a series of loopholes and problems that urgently need to be addressed. It is long past time to restore the balance of powers and fix our democracy.
“Public Citizen applauds U.S. Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), and the rest of the supporters of this legislation for passing the Protecting Our Democracy Act in the House, as well as the Biden administration for its support of these critical democracy reforms. Now we look to the U.S. Senate to take up the bill and send these commonsense proposals to curb presidential abuses of power and bolster the system of checks and balances to the president’s desk.”
