Department of Defense Slow-walks Review of Wind Projects, Blocking U.S. Energy Development

White House tilting at windmills, setting back American energy affordability and progress

WASHINGTON — The American Clean Power Association today said the U.S. Department of Defense is slow-walking its review of 165 onshore wind farms across the United States, including projects on private property. The Department of Defense wrote that wind infrastructure would “have the inherent potential to adversely impact or impair military testing, training and operations,” according to reporting from CNN. In response, David Arkush, director of Public Citizen’s Climate Program, issued the following statement:

“Donald Quixote Trump is tilting at windmills again, weaponizing the federal government to shut down dozens of gigawatts of wind energy that would power millions of homes and lower electricity rates for everyone.

“Trump’s actions are part of an ongoing attempt to kill a burgeoning U.S. industry, putting who knows how many people out of work and forcing us to pay more for electricity to enrich his fossil-fuel billionaire patrons. It’s the same old story. Big Oil juices its profits, and American families are shouldered with costly energy, spiking insurance rates, and a host of other climate-related harms.

“This move is more evidence that this administration cannot be trusted to administer any ‘permitting reform’ agreement. There is no end to the creativity it will deploy to block clean energy projects.”
