Anti-Monopoly Enforcer Ousted from DOJ

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Top Trump administration officials had decided to oust Justice Department (DOJ) antitrust chief Abigail Slater and had discussions with her shortly before she announced on social media that she was leaving the department, according to CBS News. Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, released the following statement:

“There goes the last remaining DOJ official who was kinda trying to enforce against corporate lawbreaking.

“Gail Slater was a serious antitrust law enforcer. The best conclusion to be drawn from her firing is that she objected to the administration’s efforts to weaponize antitrust law to favor its corporate cronies and threaten corporations that don’t show sufficient fealty.

“The losers will be consumers – who should expect higher prices and more collusion among favored Trump companies – and our democracy, which depends on aggressive and even-handed application of anti-monopoly law.”
