Amazon Must Change, Be Broken Up Following Bezos’ Departure

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Amazon announced today that Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy will replace Jeff Bezos as CEO during the third quarter of 2021. Bezos will transition to executive chair of Amazon’s board. Robert Weissman, president of Public Citizen, released the following statement:

“Jeff Bezos’ departure as CEO is a chance for Amazon to turn over a new leaf. It should start by paying all its workers a living wage and ensuring they have safe and healthy working conditions – and also must end practices of squeezing small businesses and manipulating consumers.

“Bezos’ departure also should be an inflection point for the U.S. government. We can’t rely on Amazon to reform itself. Amazon should be broken up and its business model refashioned.”
