After Years of Pressure, Toyota to Sell Seven EV Models in U.S. by 2027

WASHINGTON —Toyota announced yesterday that it plans to sell seven EV models in the United States by mid-2027, a significant increase over the two models it currently offers, according to a report from Bloomberg. The world’s largest automaker currently ranks last in producing electric vehicles and has become the most aggressive anti-EV lobbyist and the largest funder of climate deniers amongst automakers.

Recently, the company led the charge against Clean Cars II–which last week the Senate voted to repeal, urging its employees to lobby against reduced-emissions standards. In response, Adam Zuckerman, senior clean vehicles campaigner with Public Citizen’s Climate Program, issued the following statement:

“Does this announcement show that Toyota is serious about the EV transition, or is it simply an attempt to create a positive media cycle ahead of a shareholder meeting where its famously anti-EV board chair is facing growing investor discontent? If Toyota is serious about EVs, it needs to show it by ending its anti-climate lobbying and support for climate deniers. This is an opportunity for Toyota to take advantage of America’s growing market for electric vehicles and go from EV laggard to EV leader.”
