After Trump’s Deep Electric Vehicle Rollbacks, General Motors to Slash Hundreds of Factory Jobs

WASHINGTON — General Motors (GM) today announced it would cut 1,200 factory jobs at its Detroit plant where it builds electric vehicles (EVs). In addition, the company announced it would lay off thousands of workers at its battery plants as well, citing “an evolving regulatory environment.” As part of Trump’s budget bill, Republicans allowed a $7,500 federal tax credit for EV buyers to expire earlier this year. In response, Will Anderson, EV policy advocate with Public Citizen’s Climate Program, issued the following statement:

“While electric car sales continue to break records globally, Trump and Republicans’ reversal of the EV tax credit will continue to hamstring American manufacturers and harm American workers with the kinds of job losses we’re seeing from GM. If we want American car makers to compete in the rapidly growing global EV market, then we must support the good paying union jobs they provide here at home and make more EVs.”
