2012 Olympics brought to you by BP
With two years until the start of the 2012 London Olympic Games, some are already questioning BP’s commitment as a major sponsor.
Following the devastating oil spill on the United States’ Gulf Coast and the way in which the corporation has handled it, some think it would be best for BP not to go forward with the sponsorship. The company has already paid $1.5 billion in response to the spill, and has tentatively agreed to place $20 billion to an escrow account to pay victims. The New York Times discussed the possibility that BP could even go bankrupt in wake of the spill. So can BP even afford the sponsorship?
Even with the flow of oil stopped, will everyone be able to forgive BP for the disaster two years from now? Seems like the President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, already has. He is still allowing the oil giant to sponsor the event, despite the company being responsible for a disaster.
He claims, “Everyone can be exposed to an accident.”
So, should BP be sponsoring the 2012 Olympics?
