Trump’s Lawyers Float Red Herring to Undermine Mueller Investigation

Statement of Lisa Gilbert, Vice President of Legislative Affairs, Public Citizen

Trump administration lawyers are citing “conflicts of interest” to attack special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe and are calling for an additional special counsel to “investigate the investigation.” That’s rich coming from the most conflict-ridden administration in modern history and an obvious red herring.

Mueller is a Republican who was appointed to head the FBI by President George W. Bush and is a Trump administration appointee. He is an honorable man who receives consistent praise from Republicans on Capitol Hill as well as Trump’s own lawyers. But now that indictments have been handed out and former Trump aides are cooperating with the special counsel, the administration’s tune has changed dramatically. A smear campaign shouldn’t be allowed to impact the important work of the investigation to uncover whatever the Trump administration has to hide.

We must get to the bottom of any collusion to influence the 2016 election as well as any obstruction of the investigation to date by Trump himself. The special counsel must be allowed to do his job.
