MEDIA ADVISORY

Trump’s Declaration Prompts More Than Half a Million Opposition Petitions Opposing Nation’s Non-Emergency Declaration

Advocates Will Gather and Deliver Petitions to Lawmakers

WHAT: Immigrant rights, pro-democracy and progressive groups will deliver more than a half million petitions to U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and other key senators from Americans who oppose President Donald Trump’s declaration to manufacture an immigration crisis and misuse public funds to build a bigoted wall.

The petitions argue that Trump’s declaration is an abuse of power and that Trump exceeded his constitutional authority by issuing the declaration among other concerns.

The signers urge the U.S. Senate to vote to block the emergency declaration.

Last Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives ignored Trump’s veto threat and voted to approve U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro’s (D-Texas) resolution to revoke Trump’s emergency declaration. The Senate should vote in accordance with Castro’s resolution as it moves to their chamber.

The event is being organized by Public Citizen, United We Dream, CREDO Action, The Immigration Hub, Movimiento Cosecha, America’s Voice, People For the American Way, Democracy for America, Win Without War, Detention Watch Network and Color of Change.
