Protest Outside Pence’s Celebration With Lobbyists and Tax Dodgers Highlights How Republican Tax Scheme Is for Corporate Donors

WHAT: Protest outside the corporate-backed Tax Foundation’s “Tax Prom,” featuring keynote speaker Vice President Mike Pence. On hand will be Monopoly Man and the Tax Day “Trump Chicken” and “Cleanup Carl,” accompanied by music, protesters and revelers. Public Citizen will be joined by members of Patriotic Millionaires, Working Families Party, Americans for Tax Fairness, Not One Penny and many others. The protest will be held on the heels of an expected floor vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on its tax giveaway legislation. Many of the sponsors and attendees of the Tax Prom have been prominent beneficiaries of loopholes that allow them to avoid paying their fair share of federal taxes, and these same companies and individuals stand to gain under the GOP tax plan.
Tens of millions of middle-class American families will receive a tax increase under the Republican plan. And on Tuesday, the U.S. Senate included a repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate in its plan, meaning 13 million more Americans would be uninsured.
The protest will feature Americans who will be harmed by corporate tax giveaways that will be funded by kicking people off health insurance and slashing Medicare, Medicaid and education. The Tax Prom sponsors include Pfizer, Merck, ExxonMobil, Dow, Caterpillar and others that already have offshore tax havens and who stand to benefit handsomely from the tax legislation.
