The GOP Has Endangered Our Health Care
Trump and Republicans in Congress have, once again, shut down our government, and American families are paying the price. MAGA Republicans have chosen furthering their partisan agenda over the health and well-being of millions of Americans. Their reckless refusal to govern responsibly has put critical healthcare programs at risk, driving up costs and threatening access to essential services.
They Endangered Our Healthcare
The GOP’s shutdown has left vital health programs in limbo and millions of Americans facing uncertainty. Their funding proposals slashed funding for lifesaving services and research, and advanced an agenda of privatization, cost-cutting, and corporate giveaways. In addition, we face a cliff as a set of the critical subsidies in the Affordable Care Act are set to expire. We must urgently address this before millions of Americans face a massive premium hike. The House GOP’s proposed funding bill is a blank check for these painful cuts to our health care.
They Broke Faith with Our Constitution
Republicans have also broken faith with the American system of checks and balances. It’s not a deal if one side can immediately violate what was agreed to with impoundments and recissions – lawless funding cuts that Congress did not approve. Article I of our Constitution makes crystal clear that Congress – not the president – holds the power of the purse. Without assurances in law that the deal will be honored, we already know the Trump administration will do the opposite, illegally clawing back appropriated money.
The Consequences Are Clear
This shutdown is not an accident. It’s the direct result of MAGA Republicans refusing to negotiate in good faith, undermining constitutional norms, and abandoning their responsibility to protect the health and security of the American people. Until they end this manufactured crisis, millions will continue to suffer.
