New York Hospital Birth Statistics by County
Calculation Details
The Bureau of Biometrics and Health Statistics of the New York State Department of Health maintains data on maternity procedures performed in each hospital. We requested the most recent data from the Bureau, and received the following data for 2007 for each hospital:
- Total number of births
- Number of vaginal births
- Number of cesarean births
- Number of primary cesareans
- Number of repeat cesareans (the Bureau indicates these may be undercounted)
- Number of vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC; may also be undercounted)
- Births assisted by midwives
- Births paid by Medicaid
The state currently has a total of 231 hospitals; in 2007, 155 of these performed deliveries. Because three of the latter have closed since 2007, we have not included them in our analysis. We collected data for the remaining 152 hospitals that perform deliveries and are still open. Some of these perform few deliveries; their numbers are therefore subject to great fluctuation and are not reliable over time. We thus excluded from our database any hospital meeting either of the following criteria:
1. Those reporting fewer than 30 births
2. Those that performed fewer than five cesarean sections.
A total of nine hospitals met both of the exclusion criteria. We therefore focused on the remaining 143 hospitals; these constitute the sample on which our analyses are based.
The following calculations for each hospitals that meets did not meet the exclusion criteria appears below:
Cesarean % = Number of primary cesareans plus number of repeat cesareans, divided by number of births for information is available
Primary Cesarean Rate = Number of primary cesareans divided by number of women who gave birth who had not undergone previous cesareans
VBAC Rate = Number of VBACs divided by number of women who have had previous cesareans.
Attended by Midwife % = Number of births attended by midwives divided by the number of births for which information is available
Paid for by Medicaid % = Births paid for by Medicaid divided by total births.
Episiotomy % = Number of episiotomies divided by number of vaginal births
