Protest of Alabama Power’s Effort To Buy Tenaska Lindsay Hill Gas Power Plant

By Tyson Slocum

We raise concerns that allowing Alabama Power to acquire such a large fossil fuel power plant within its service territory raises market power concerns, as giving control of the facility to the Southern Company affiliate could lead to rate hikes for Alabama Power customers. We note, among other issues, that the output of the power plant is currently controlled by commodity trader Mercuria, which in turn sells much of the power to Alabama Power affiliates.
