With Slew of Pardons, Trump Attempts to Rewrite Story of January 6th Insurrection

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump today pardoned 77 individuals responsible for the chaos and insurrection surrounding the 2020 presidential election. The pardons, which include Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, John Eastman, Jenna Ellis, Kenneth Chesebro, Mark Meadows, Jeffrey Clark, and Boris Epshteyn, allow the individuals to avoid any federal charges for their role in the insurrection on January 6, 2021. The pardons will allow those responsible for the fake elector schemes, those who pressured state officials to “find” votes, and those who plotted to use the Justice Department to legitimize false claims of election fraud clemency.

In response, Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen and co-chair of Not Above the Law Coalition, issued the following statement:

“Pardoning those at the center of the January 6th insurrection is an attempt to obscure the very real peril Trump and the fellow plotters posed to democracy in the United States. The pardons are yet another example of Trump abusing his presidential powers to insulate those who remain loyal to him from the rule of law—and a democracy-threatening message to future Trump-collaborating lawbreakers that they, too, can expect pardons if they break the law in service of their master.

“This dark attempt to rewrite the story of January 6, despite the abundance of evidence of the danger posed by these plotters, should shake every American to their core.”
