Ways & Means Committee Marks Up Bill to Provide Handouts to the Wealthy Few, Funded by Cruel Cuts
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives tax writing committee, Ways & Means, is marking up its bill to implement its part of Republicans’ plan to drastically cut services in order to provide additional tax giveaways to wealthy Americans and large, profitable companies, which Public Citizen opposes. In advance of the mark-up, Susan Harley, managing director of Public Citizen’s Congress Watch division, released the following statement:
“The title of this legislation should be ‘The One, Big, Ugly Handout to the Rich and Corporations’ since it represents a panoply of policy choices that favor the few over the many. It would cement handouts to the wealthiest Americans while extending and expanding Big Business giveaways. The frosting on this ‘let them eat cake’ tax package is a provision that would eliminate Direct File, the free IRS software that was a public option alternative to paid tax prep companies. The bill would also give unprecedented power to the executive branch and allow it to unilaterally designate nonprofits as ‘terrorist supporting organizations,’ possibly silencing them overnight without due process.”
