Statement of Susan Harley, Managing Director, Public Citizen’s Congress Watch Division
Note: President Donald Trump today said he opposes funding for the U.S. Postal Service because “they need that money in order to make the Post Office work, so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots.” Public Citizen has long pushed for increased funding to secure our elections ahead of the 2020 election and shore up the USPS’ finances during the COVID-19 pandemic. This Trump admission comes after Republican megadonor Postmaster General Louis DeJoy slowed down USPS operations and implemented service cuts.
First he wanted to delay the election – but even after push back from fellow Republicans Trump is again attempting a coup on our elections by making it even more difficult to vote by mail.
Trump and his election saboteur aide Louis DeJoy must stop their demolition of the postal service. Mail-in voting is an absolute necessity to ensure Americans can exercise their right to vote amid the worst pandemic in a century – which Trump has also made dramatically worse – just like everything else he touches.
Trump latest attempts to underfund and stifle the postal service not only puts American’s access to vital medicines, products and government payments at risk – it threatens our election system and our democracy.
